Salmon, Three Ways

Salmon is a delicious, easily accessible, and simple-to-prepare protein that deserves a spot in your regular mealtime routine. However, it can be easy to tire of the same old preparation or way of cooking it.

In this article, I share three different cooking methods to consider trying for making salmon! Whether you roast it, steam it, or grill it, one thing is for sure: it will be delicious!

Read on to learn more about these three cooking methods and the recipes to try yourself!

Method #1: How To Roast Salmon

Arguably one of the easiest and most sought out ways to prepare salmon quickly, roasting salmon couldn’t be simpler! The key is to not overcook it, but rather serve it tender and moist. You can achieve this by roasting it at a high temperature for a shorter period of time. Alternatively, of course, you could opt for a lower temperature for a longer amount of time, but on my busiest nights when I’m looking for something fast, the high-temperature method is what I opt for!

My Maple Dijon Roasted Salmon  is the perfect weeknight meal! Just 4 ingredients make up the mouthwatering sauce, which is brushed onto the salmon and baked until tender and flaky. Mouthwateringly delicious!

Method #2: How To Steam Salmon

The next method for cooking salmon is called “en papillote”. This translates to “in paper” in French. The protein, in this case fish, is layered with vegetables, aromatics, seasonings, and fat on a piece of parchment paper with the edges being crimped and wrapped, creating a seal. This allows the food enclosed to steam while in the oven. It’s a delicious and often times low fat cooking method which delivers consistently delicious results!

In my Salmon En Papillote recipe, asparagus, salad, lemon, garlic, and basil are layered and topped with a fillet of salmon which is drizzled with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. These packets are then baked for 15 minutes at 400°, resulting in tender, flaky, and flavorful salmon!

The beauty of this recipe is that so many ingredients work well with it! Consider the following ingredient and flavor combinations:

  1. Zucchini, cherry tomatoes, Italian parsley, and lemon
  2. Lime, fresh ginger, garlic, soy sauce, and cilantro
  3. Green beans, dill, shallot, Dijon mustard

Choose your favorite ingredients to layer and make your own favorite combination!

Method #3: How To Grill Salmon

Grilled salmon is one of those recipes that people seek out. How to get the perfect char, the right balance of flavors, and that moist texture that at times seem illustrious. My Grilled Mediterranean Salmon recipe covers all the bases, offering up the smokiness from the grill while maintaining delicious flavor by way of a Mediterranean relish!

Grilling salmon can be done one of two ways: on a gas grill or on charcoal. Both are excellent options, and can deliver delicious results.

Preparing salmon on a gas grill is arguably less complex and more attainable for many. My favorite way to get great results grilling salmon on a gas grill is by grilling it indirectly. This occurs when you use a low amount of the burners on your grill to serve as the heating element. For example, on a three burner grill, using just one of the burners to produce the heat while placing your salmon on the opposite side of the grill is how you indirectly cook. I particularly love using a smoker box with my gas grill, which yields delicious smoky results without needing to use charcoal.

Grilling with charcoal is the best way to get that quintessential smoky flavor. Using charcoal briquettes, you can still accomplish the same indirect cooking method as you would on a gas grill. This simply means that you would bank your charcoal briquettes on one side of the grill, again placing your food on the opposite side to cook. This method may be a little more inconsistent, and may take a little more time. However, the result will be just as (if not more so!) delicious as grilling with gas!

Again, my Grilled Mediterranean Salmon is an excellent way to enjoy this delicious fish! The salmon is perfectly grilled and topped with a salty, briny, and flavor packed relish reminiscent of the Mediterranean.
